Awareness in meditation

The calling to a practice of meditation is as unique as the individual receiving it. We are all a collection of our experiences and perspectives, behaviours and emotions. A personal practice of regular meditation can deliver a space of healing and growth. To get the most out of any practice, true engagement with your awareness is needed. Take a moment with yourself now and notice how awareness is experienced for you.

Meditation has no goal, meditation gives us the opportunity to be. In these moments allowing your awareness to fall gently on your experience in the moment at hand can give you greater insight into yourself as a being in that moment.

The trajectory of your journey is always in your control. This is emphasised through personal practice. How you respond to the awareness of yourself through your journey will help you direct the trajectory of your path. You may not have control over the experiences presented to you or imposed upon you, however you do have control of your response and your awareness, as a result of your focus.

With this understanding you have the ultimate control in your own life. Awareness in honesty of the self presents us with the opportunity of healing, change and growth. This practice can present challenges as well as breakthroughs and personal insight. I share this with love, compassion and true personal understanding of the challenges to be experienced when you engage this work.

Understanding the potential challenges that can present themselves through this practice is vitally important, as is the knowledge that engaging in this work should be done with a gentle heart & mind, self compassion & a true desire for deeper growth of self-love. With this focus in the fore of your mind, compassionate choices will be easily attained as your awareness meets challenging engagement.

The needs of the individual experience may vary. Some things you can do to support yourself during practice when feeling challenged are;

  • Stay in the moment.

  • Return to your anchor.

  • Open your eyes, while staying in practice.

  • Honour your body’s needs for movement.

  • Connect the internal & external experience.

  • Share your experience with a partner/friend.

  • Journal your experience.

Another way to address challenges before they arise is through removing the pressure and expectation of our experiences in practice. This can allow your awareness to flow more naturally. Also, giving permission to experience your practice as it is rather than meeting another’s concept of what it “should” feel like for you can expand the awareness to the present moment.

Letting go of expectation in any area of your life means you can accept what is and move forward with more ease, reducing the sensation of feeling “stuck”.

Take ownership of your life even if it is through slow, small steps. Expand your awareness in any way or area of your life and notice the changes that follow. You have the ability and control to bless your life through your decisions.
